The car ride was horrible, being jam-packed next to her. I didn’t know whether I wanted to choke her or scream, and every feeling for the last twenty years came crashing in like a tsunami. Now she’s upstairs in the bedroom taking a shower, the bedroom where we’re both gonna have to sleep ‘cause my guys have claimed every other room. The couch down here is that type of modern shit I hate, but there’s a futon in that bedroom. Fuck if I’m not gonna get a good night’s sleep.

“You good, man?” Blade asks from a few feet away. I’m sipping on some good ol’ aged bourbon, loving the fact the Steeles have good taste. One glance at the bottle, I could immediately tell it was something luxurious.

I give him a curt nod. “Yeah, just getting my bearings with this whole thing.”

Blade cackles and then stops after I give him a warning glare. “Sorry, I just don’t think anyone could get their bearings with the situation you’re in. You know what I mean?”

Oddly enough, I do. “Yeah. Truth be told, I wish none of this was happening. Seeing her again stirred up some shit deep within me, man. Stuff I didn’t even know I had.”

Blade leans back against the black leather couch and nods his head in understanding. “Yeah, I got some rough shit from my past too. She’s an ex of yours, yeah?” I haven’t told the team everything, but I’ve given them a good idea of what’s going on. They don’t know about the twins, and who even knows if I’m going to tell them anything. I haven’t decided yet, but I’ve never been the type who enjoys oversharing.

“Yeah. Things ended badly back then,” I tell him, keeping it plain and simple.

Blade furrows his brows and chuckles lightly. “Whatever it was, I don’t think twenty years of distance between the two of you could fix it. Not with the way you look right now.”

“Shit, if that ain’t the truth, I don’t know what is.”

“You gonna be cool crashin’ on that futon up there? Well, it’s not a futon, but whatever it is.” He’s got me there. It’s more like a luxurious sleeper sofa. I should be fine, though, if I’m lucky.

“Lucian, I got something interesting on that resort,” Alpha pipes up from where he’s sitting at the dining room table.

I rise from the chair I’m in and head over to where he is. “What’s up?”

“You know it was taking me a while to pull who the owner of that resort is to see if we could find any sort of common link or reasoning that she was taken there, yeah?”

I nod. “Yeah.”

“It’s owned by a shell corporation. I can’t find anything that remotely suggests the company that owns the resort is legitimate. It’s like a fuckin’ ghost town.” Well, this news only complicates things, but truth be told, I’m not surprised. Going into this, we should’ve naturally assumed this wouldn’t be easy, and it’s not going to be.
